Jasmine Women (Drama / Completed)

A sumptuous and intimate epic, a tale of three generations of Women in the one family, unfolding over three chapters.

The first chapter – "Grandmother" tells the tale of Mo (Golden Globe Nominee and International Superstar Zhang Ziyi) a girl who has moved to Shanghai in the1930's to pursue her dreams of fame and fortune on the big screen. It is here she meets the charismatic and sly "Boss" Meng, a talent scout who promises to fulfill her dreams, Mo falls immediately in love. But soon her dreams are destroyed by the realities of the real world and love soon turns into betrayal.

Chapter 2 - "Mother" finds Mo (now played by Joan Chen) twenty years older and still dreaming of the glory of what could have been. Living in 1950's communist China with her daughter Li (Zhang Ziyi), who is in love with a young man she finds questionable. Zou Jie (Lu Yi) is a handsome young student who seems to fuel her daughter's socialist ideals. When Li is married secretly the bond between mother and daughter is scarred. However in the midst of love Li comes to the realization that she is unable to have a child. This brings with it depression and tragedy, however, it is the adoption of a baby girl names Hua that brings hope to the family.

Chapter 3 - "Daughter" is set in 1980, Hua (played by Zhang Ziyi in her third role) has been raised under the watchful eye of her grand mother Mo, who is still very much star struck and talking of the life that could have been. Following in the footsteps of her Mother and Grandmother, Hua has secretly married a brilliant fellow student Di (Liu Ye), Mirroring the events of the past. Her tragedy and triumphs bringing life of the family full circle.

A breathtaking debut film from master cinematographer Hou Yong (THE BLUE KITE, THE ROAD HOME) who insights powerful, candid, intimate and multi faceted performances from both Joan Chen and Zhang Ziyi, arguably two of Asian cinema's biggest female stars. A tale spanning fifty years, with eye popping art direction by Min Zongsi and sublime photography by Yao Xiafeng, JASMINE WOMEN is a heart achingly beautiful film for the Mother, Daughter, Wife and Lover in all of us. This is a film for and about every woman.
