Like Minds (Thiller / Completed)

A forensic psychologist, Sally Rowe, is appointed by police to determine whether there's enough evidence to lay murder charges against 17 year old Alex, accused in the shotgun death of his school mate Nigel.

With no tangible evidence, the detective on the case is under pressure from Alex's influential father to have the charges dropped. Delving deeply into Alex and Nigel's bizarre symbiotic pact, Rowe discovers that though dead, Nigel's psychological effect on Alex is far from diminished.

Luke Buckmaster, InFilm.com.au:

"Every once in a while a great thriller doubles as an extraordinary character study, and every once in a while a filmmaker can plunge their audiences so deeply into the recesses of a character's mind that no amount of cold showers or skin scrubbing can remove the psychological creepy crawlies. If you're not a little rattled by Alex (Eddie Radmayne) and Nigel (Tom Sturridge), the remorseless private school protagonists of Australian writer/director Gregory J. Read's bone chilling Like Minds, it may be time to check your pulse or find the nearest shrink couch to start chatting about your feelings. Tearing away the insignia of private school education and prying into a tangled web of iniquitous plots beneath, Reed's thriller is a supremely unnerving coming-of-age story that delves into some of cinema's darkest no-fly zones. It creates a psychological stratum that would have Sigmund Freud dripping with sweat and reaching for Valium."

"Like Minds is a potent reminder that horror aesthetic has nothing on psychological drama. If visual images can frighten us, the space in between frames is what truly terrifies. Read gives us little on the surface that confronts, but as we grow closer to the characters the horror becomes increasingly palpable and pushes us into suffocating proximity. The human mind is the ultimate scary phenomenon, and the film internally recognises this..."

"Like Minds is an expertly woven bone chiller that drips with atmosphere and grips like leeches to flesh. If Hannibal Lecter, Norman Bates and the rest of the cinema sickos confederation ever got wind that they were being given a run for their money by a couple of sniveling teenage brats, they would very quickly reach for the cannibal cooking book and don mother’s wig. Sigmund Freud, eat your heart out."
